This sermon explores the spiritual imperative to overcome fear and advocate for the systemic needs of children in the American South. Drawing upon the bold prophetic tradition of ancient scriptures (including Isaiah, Proverbs, and Joshua) and the historic, calculated courage of Rosa Parks, this sermon challenges the congregation to put Unitarian Universalist values into concrete action. It connects the spiritual call to “be strong and courageous” with the modern, urgent needs of the region’s children: access to high-quality early care and education, affordable housing, comprehensive healthcare, and nutritious food. Ultimately, the sermon serves as a call to move past the paralysis of political fear or despair, using our collective voice to dismantle systemic barriers and ensure a flourishing future for the youngest and most vulnerable members of our interdependent web.
