Lights in the Darkness

,

In the season of winter, the nights grow longer, the air grows colder, and the bringing of light to the darkness is celebrated by many faith traditions. The wise men follow a star to find the baby Jesus, we string our trees and homes with lights, the Hanukkah and Kwanzaa candles burn bright, the Yule log’s flames shine through the Winter Solstice, and UU’s continue to gather in community around our chalice flame. In this season of darkness, nature’s wisdom can guide us to peace and rest and allow us each to see the glow of the unique light we bring to this world.

This year, the “pageant” will not be a full play. Instead, we’ll have music, readings, poetry, and a theatrical scene related to the unifying theme of “Lights in the Darkness.” There will be opportunities for participation for everyone (babies, toddlers, kids, and teens). Please join in and add your unique and special light! For families and volunteers I’ve already talked with personally, please refer to this Google doc:

“Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion: The Wisdom of Jonathan Haidt”

Dr. Michael Sullivan will be presenting a creative understanding of why good people are divided by politics and religion. It is based on the work of social psychologist Jonathan Haidt.  Dr. Haidt concludes that “morality binds and blinds”. Using the six foundations of morality derived from his research, we can gain a better understanding of “the righteous mind” that everyone has. This can help bridge political and religious divides and promote greater respect for opposing views.

Abundance? The Earth Is Asking.

Politicos on the Left and Right have used the buzz words abundance and scarcity for decades to justify their government policies and practices. But too few have ever paid enough attention to Earth’s all-encompassing ecology—and our UU Seventh Principle, “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.”
