We like to think of ourselves as more rational than the church down the street, and this is broadly true. I’d like to examine five examples of “unreason”, ranging from one that’s specifically characteristic of conservative Christianity, to a couple that seem to be more popular among liberals, including one that threatens public health.

The development of spiritual virtues – loving all of life, even the hard parts; equanimity, compassion – may be entirely a matter of getting our neurons wired a certain way, but the circuitry of spirituality differs from the circuitry of cognition and emotion, though it draws on both.
