Join Donald Cooper* for a focused study of the history of Unitarianism and Universalism, as presented readably in 200 pp. by David E. Bumbaugh in the book Unitarian Universalism: A Narrative History (published 2000, reprinted 2001), which leans on the two-volume A History of Unitarianism by Earl M. Wilbur (1945, 1952).
The first meeting of those interested in the course will take place in Room 8 of the UUCC building at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 9th.
*(Donald Cooper was born in Dec. 1940 in SE Virginia. Although he was baptized in the Episcopal church in the following summer, his early experience of Christianity ended there. When his parents were among the founders of a Unitarian group in Hampton, Va. in about 1954, he participated in it. He attended a secondary boarding school in Vermont in 1955-1958, and the Universalist chaplain of the school widened Cooper’s experience of liberal religion. Cooper studied Slavic languages and linguistics at Harvard, where he received his B.A. mcl in 1962 and his Ph.D. in 1971. His doctoral work required extensive acquaintance with early and medieval Christian texts both in the original Greek and in medieval Slavic translations. His further studies led him to become a research professor of otolaryngology in a medical school, contributing to the knowledge of the physiology of the larynx and voice and the history of their study. In the background he has continued his private study of the history of Christianity and liberal religions. Since 1986 he has been active in Unitarian congregations in Los Angeles, Columbia SC, NW Ohio, and the Washington DC area.)
