With Don Cooper, we will study Unitarianism and Universalism in the course of their modern development. Modern Unitarianism first dates approximately from the Reformation period (16th century) in Europe. The origins of Universalism can be found in the early years of Christianity, but it emerged in distinct organizational form only in the late 18th century in New England. The development of both Unitarianism and Universalism is readably presented by David E. Bumbaugh in a work (published 2000) which draws heavily on the two-volume history of Unitarianism by Earl M. Wilbur. Wilbur’s two volumes (1945, 1950) are detailed and outstanding, while Bumbaugh’s two hundred pages, on which we will focus, provide an accessible introduction to the development of both these religions. The first meeting of those interested in the course will take place in Room 8 of the UUCC building at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 9th.
