January 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and has been set aside as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The images of these camps provide us with some of the most disturbing scenes in history as well as windows into the darkness of humanity. On this day, we remember the millions who were imprisoned, traumatized, and killed. What have we learned? The most tragic points in our history stand to be repeated if we do not seize the learning opportunities.

Politicos on the Left and Right have used the buzz words abundance and scarcity for decades to justify their government policies and practices. But too few have ever paid enough attention to Earth’s all-encompassing ecology—and our UU Seventh Principle, “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.”
