After reviewing our current Congregational Covenant and those of other UU churches, the Ad Hoc Committee on the Covenant unanimously recommends adoption of our Congregational Affirmation as our Congregational Covenant:
Love is the doctrine of this congregation,
The quest for truth is its sacrament,
And service is its prayer.
To dwell together in peace,
To seek knowledge in freedom,
To serve others in community,
Thus do we covenant with one another.
The Committee noted that this statement of our covenantal religious beliefs has been unofficially labeled our “Congregational Covenant” in our weekly Order of Service for over a decade. It is a succinct, elegant, and incisive summary of our non-creedal religious beliefs that many have found inspiring and uplifting. It has served us well and stood the test of time for our congregation. It avoids the potential for imposing doctrinal requirements and authoritarian obligations on individual members in keeping with our longstanding UU beliefs in congregational autonomy and freedom of belief.
Therefore, the Committee recommends our official adoption of this affirmation as our Congregational Covenant.
