Speaker: Professor Ed Madden

Ed Madden is a professor of English at the University of South Carolina and the interim director of the Women’s & Gender Studies Program. In 2015 he was named poet laureate for the City of Columbia. In 2019-2020, he spent 2 months in Bahia, Brazil, on an artist residency at the Instituto Sacatar in Itaparica.

    In 2019, Ed Madden went to Brazil, where he wrote about time and memory, and where he encountered Afro-Brazilian religions. His presentation tells the story of one particular encounter and how it made him rethink his relation with his family and their religious history and prejudices.
